Author Ludwig Bemelmans signs this British edition of the beloved ''Madeline'' and adds a sketch of an elephant being held comically overhead by a boy. Published by Derek Verschoyle: London: 1953. With blue ink upon the front free endpaper, the renowned illustrator draws a smiling child suspending a stout elephant in midair. Below the drawing, he writes, ''To the Superchief from his Godfather / Ludwig''. Written on the elephant are the words, ''Bebe font'', also in his hand. Bemelmans published a book in 1966 entitled ''Elephant Cutlet,'' to which this drawing might reference. Light foxing and soiling to opening pages and pastedowns of 9'' x 12.25'' book, which has illustrated paper boards. Moderate foxing and paper loss to original dustjacket with unclipped 12s. 6d. price. Overall very good condition.
