Letter to Stephen Van Rensselaer, dated 14 April 1823 reads, ''...When I had the pleasure of seeing you last I hinted that there was a subject on which I contemplated speaking to you. The enclosed papers explain it...the high respect in which I hold your good opinion, have induced me to communicate to you, what is yet & will continue to be a profound secret to all my most confidential friends... It will give me pleasure to learn that you approve the course I have taken...'' Accompanied by an 8.5'' x 11'' engraving of Van Buren. Single-page letter with integral address cover measures 7.75'' x 9.5''. Repairs to address sheet not affecting text of letter. Even toning with mail folds and light creasing, else near fine.
