George Washington autograph letter signed, dated 8 June 1787 from Philadelphia during the Constitutional Convention. Only three weeks earlier, Washington was elected President of the Convention, one of the most important gatherings of founding fathers and statesmen in U.S. history. Convening there since May, the delegates believed they would be revising the Articles of Confederation; however, once there, pro-Federalist members convinced the body to draft and adopt a Constitution that unified the colonies, and the federal government was thus borne.
Washington writes to Roger Alden, deputy secretary of the Continental Congress, thanking him for sending newspapers, on behalf of the Congress, to him. Letter reads in full,
''Sir, I have been honored with your favor of the 31st ult, enclosed. The Gazettes of New York - let me entreat you to make my acknowledgements to the Hon'ble members of Congress who were so obliging as to direct them to be sent to me; - and that you would be pleased to accept, yourself, my thanks for the regularity with which they have been forwarded. / I am Sir / Yr. Most Obed. H'ble Serv. / Go: Washington''.
