Collection of at least eight strands of Abraham Lincoln's hair preserved in an oval-shaped gold tone metal locket with an image of the President opposite the strands. According to the National Institute of Health, National Library of Medicine a lock of Lincoln's hair was clipped during the autopsy per Mary Todd Lincoln's request. Another lock was clipped by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, who put it into an envelope and addressed the envelope to Mary Jane Welles, wife of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. These strands are from a ringlet of Lincoln's hair included in the collection of his Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, sold at the Skinner auction held in Boston on 8 November 1983. Includes a letter of provenance from Skinner. Locket itself measures 0.5'' x 0.75'' with original chain intact. Near fine condition.
