Sell Your Dewey Defeats Truman Newspaper

The “Dewey Defeats Truman” newspaper headline of November 3, 1948 is one of the most recognized media errors of the 20th century. The mishap occurred because the Chicago Daily Tribune’s printing process required more time than usual on election day due to a printers’ strike. Votes had not been completely tallied up at the time of the deadline but numerous polls had predicted Thomas Dewey would win the election, so the newspaper staff reported the prediction. The newspaper was eventually pulled from shelves once the mistake was realized, but about 2,000 copies had already reached readers.

Rare UPI press photo twice-signed by Harry Truman, showing the newly elected President holding up the famous “Chicago Daily Tribune” newspaper that erroneously proclaimed his defeat. Truman signs “Harry Truman” across the white newspaper, and again on his sleeve “Harry Truman”, where he also inscribes the photo. Upon the verso is the United Press-International stamp, transferring the photo to the Truman Library. A piece of paper from the Truman Library is also taped to the verso. Satin-finish silver gelatin photo measures 10″ x 8″. Mild buckling to lower portion and some fading to black ink signatures, otherwise near fine condition. An exceptionally rare photo as signed by Truman. With University Archives COA. Sold for $4,200.

“Dewey Defeats Truman” Newspaper — The Most Famous Newspaper Mistake of All Time — Near Fine Condition

“Chicago Daily Tribune” newspaper dated 3 November 1948 exclaiming “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN”, the most famous newspaper faux-pas of the 20th century. The Tribune so quickly rushed its printing that some of the type on the second page is even printed upside down. Most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune realized its error, and only 2,000 were estimated to have reached private hands. Rare complete Home City edition comprises the entire first, second and third sections. Measures 16.675″ x 23.5″. In much nicer condition than usually found, with very little toning and virtually no chipping. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,760.

Harry Truman Twice-Signed 13.25” x 10.5” Photograph, Famously Showing Truman Holding Up the ”Dewey Defeats Truman” Newspaper — Truman Writes ”They missed the boat?”

Harry Truman twice-signed large photo, showing the newly elected President holding up the famous ”Chicago Daily Tribune” newspaper that erroneously proclaimed his defeat. Silver gelatin photograph measures 13.25” x 10.5”, upon which Truman writes ”They missed the boat? / HST” and also ”To Arch Salyer / kind regards from / Harry S. Truman / 5-11-65”. Matte finish photo is taped on verso to mat board measuring 16” x 14”. Photo is lightly creased, overall very good plus condition with bold signatures. A rare photo as signed by Truman, showcasing the worse newspaper blunder of the 20th century. Sold for $3,025.

The Most Famous Newspaper Mistake of All Time — ”Dewey Defeats Truman”

”Chicago Daily Tribune” newspaper dated 3 November 1948 featuring 1.5” banner headline ”DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN”, the most famous newspaper faux-pas of the 20th century. This complete three-section newspaper is rare as most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune Co. realized its error. Only 2,000 were estimated to have reached private hands and many have disappeared since 1948. Runs 40pp. Very light toning. Tears along right edge and middle fold, else near fine. A rare and very desirable historical issue in very good condition. Sold for $1,758.

”Chicago Daily Tribune” newspaper dated 3 November 1948 featuring 1.5” banner headline ”DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN”, the most famous newspaper faux-pas of the 20th century. The Tribune so quickly rushed its printing that some of the type is even printed upside down. Most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune realized its error, and only 2,000 were estimated to have reached private hands. First section only runs 28pp. Normal toning and light chipping. A rare and very desirable issue in very good condition. Sold for $1,720.

”Chicago Daily Tribune” 3 November 1948 — ”Dewey Defeats Truman” Infamous Headline

Chicago Daily Tribune Home edition from 3 November 1948, declaring the ultimate blooper, ”Dewey Defeats Truman”. In the rush to get the paper printed, the typeface was even printed upside down on parts of the second page. ”Bulletins on Elections” detail numbers of votes for each candidate in precincts reported. Minor toning and creasing to front page, custom framed and matted to an overall size of 22” x 17”. Very good condition. Sold for $1,420.

”Dewey Defeats Truman” Newspaper — The Most Famous Newspaper Mistake of All Time

”Chicago Daily Tribune” home edition newspaper dated 3 November 1948 exclaiming ”DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN”, the most famous newspaper faux-pas of the 20th century. The Tribune so quickly rushed its printing that some of the type is even printed upside down. Most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune realized its error, and only 2,000 were estimated to have reached private hands. Paper runs 26pp. Toning, darker to the lower portion of the front page, and chipping along right side and fold, with three small portions of paper loss. In very good condition overall, typical of this increasingly rare newspaper. Sold for $1,200.
