Unusually frank letter signed by Winston Churchill, declining a ''very attractive invitation'' because of his ''unpleasantly large number of public engagements''. Churchill writes as Chancellor of the Exchequer to Daily Express editor Ralph D. Blumenfeld, with an additional holograph salutation and closing. Upon ''Treasury Chambers / Whitehall'' stationery dated 11 August 1927, Churchill writes: ''My dear Blumenfeld, I am very sorry but I am afraid that I must decline your very attractive invitation to be the principal guest of the London district of the Institute of Journalists. I have already taken on an unpleasantly large number of public engagements in October and the last week of that month I shall be spending in my constituency - addressing two meetings a night...[signed] Winston S. Churchill''. Single page measures 7.5'' x 9.5''. Folds and stain at upper left, otherwise near fine.
