Gagnon writes to his girlfriend Pauline Harnois on 20 January 1944 from the Naval Prison Camp in Charleston, South Carolina where he was serving as guard. In part, ''...about my furlough, I saw the first sargeant [sic], and I could get 5 days in Feb. or 8 days March the 5th so I guess we'll have to wait till March as 5 days isn't very long, it would hardly give me time to get there, I'd have to start back right away...just think of it in five more weeks exactly we'll be together again...Rene''. Accompanied by hand-addressed mailing envelope signed twice by Gagnon. Envelope is post-marked 1944, although Gagnon inadvertently dates the letter 1943. Letter in ink runs 3pp. on a single sheet of card-style stationery, measuring 6'' x 8''. Toning, else near fine.
