Grant responds, writing, ''Head Quarters, Dept of West Te[nnessee] / Corinth, July 19th 1862 / Approved and respectfully forwarded to Gen Hd Qrs. / U.S. Grant / Maj. Gen.'' An additional four Generals respond to Hamilton's request including General-in-Chief Henry Halleck who ultimately denies the request, writing, ''Not approved / Aug 22nd 1862 / H.W. Halleck . Genl in Ch'f''. The other Generals who sign the document with their autograph endorsements include William Rosencrans, Edward Townsend and Peter Watson. All men write on a sheet measuring 9.75'' x 7.75'', mounted to a slightly larger sheet, on the reverse of which is the autograph letter signed by General Charles Hamilton, who requests the leave, writing, ''I respectfully ask for leave of absence from my command for twenty five days. / An absence of over one year from my business, together with some recent complications in my private & personal affairs, renders it of vital importance to myself and family that I should give them my personal attention. / Very respectfully, / Your Obt Svt / C.S. Hamilton / Brig Gen Vols''. Some dampstaining to edge of letter and light soiling to endorsement document. Very good condition.
