Two Original Photographs From 1890-91, at the Time of the Wounded Knee Massacre -- One Photograph Shows the "Indian Training School", Where Children Were Held Hostage to Control Their Parents

Two original albumen prints from 1890 and 1891, taken by Northwestern Photo Co. of Chadron, Nebraska, whose company is well known for documenting the aftermath of the Wounded Knee massacre. One of the photos taken by Clarence Moreledge, shows the home of Chief Red Cloud, a modest two-story building that the Bureau of Indian Affairs built for the Chief, in order to "civilize" the Sioux out of their teepee homes. Moreledge's signature, and title of the photograph appear in the negative. A bit of lightness to right side, otherwise bold and well contrasted. Photo measures 7" x 4.25" on a 10" x 7" album mat, the verso of which contains another 7" x 4.25" photo, the "Indian Training School" at Pine Ridge, where children were essentially held hostage during the winter of 1890-91. "Eyewitness at Wounded Knee" quotes Elaine Goodale Eastman, who described the situation at the time, "The doors of the large Oglala boarding school were kept locked by day as well as by night and the grounds, surrounded by a high fence of barbed wire, constantly patrolled by armed guards. These boys and girls, held partly as hostages for the good behavior of their parents, in part for their own protection, must be fed, taught, and kept in order." The building would ultimately be destroyed by fire in 1894. In this photo, a group of mostly Sioux girls poses in front of the building. Photo is a bit light, but overall very good. Some buckling and staining to album mat.
