Reverdy Johnson CDV and autograph note signed, dated 13 September 1864 from Washington DC. Johnson defended Lincoln conspirator Mary Surratt, who would be the first woman executed by the federal government, convicted of conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. At this time in 1864 Surratt had been detained and was awaiting trial. Johnson writes to Robert E. Harris, Jr. of Philadelphia. Single page measures 5'' x 7.875''. Minor smudging, overall very good. Accompanied by a CDV of Johnson with photographer's backstamp of C.D. Fredericks & Co., in very good condition.
