Photoplay Award medal, the earliest award in the history of cinema. Founded in 1920, the Photoplay medal was awarded by Photoplay Magazine, one of the first film magazines and quite powerful in the motion picture business throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The medal preceded the Academy Award by 9 years and is believed to have influenced the winners selected by AMPAS. Blank medal, with no winner information engraved upon the reverse, measures 2.5'' in diameter. Presented in a wooden display measuring 6'' x 1.25''. Measures 3 oz. Light wear, else near fine.
