Oscar winner Mary Astor autograph letter signed, on stationery with her Malibu address dated 4 November 1964. Letter reads in part, ''Hi! The country really fixed that man, Goldwater, didn't it? He should learn what actors know - an audience spots a phony a mile off. One of the hazards of being a writer is that people ask you to read their manuscripts for them 'just for an opinion' - well I read them, and mostly they are junk. Recently I read a play by William F. Walker, which I think I should pass on to you 'for an opinion'. So much of it is damn good - I don't know whether the market is glutted with Negro problem plays - this one's not too heavy, about musicians, white + black, wonderful musicians' talk, etc. I'm sending it anyway. I've come to a full stop at page 244 on the book. I'll write out the problem fully to see if it doesn't yield to a few days of leaving it alone. Also, it's hard to write when you're worried. I turned down a 'Kildare'- bad script, bad part - which helped! Then, this morning I got a whopping tax bill of $800 -- last year was 4-something. 'Charlotte' has kept me in the black all summer - did a final recording session last Friday - but that is it, now. I just can't understand why nobody can use my voice for commercials - complain, complain! Yes, I have high blood pressure and have had two EKGs in the last three months - and worry isn't helping. I'm okay, otherwise - the weather is gorgeous, the sea is wonderful and Jasper is a doll. Love, Mary''. 2pp. letter on two sheets measures 8.5'' x 11''. Creasing, a pencil notation and two tiny tears to top edge of first page. Near fine.
