Mark Twain signed association copy of ''The Innocents Abroad'', Twain's best-selling book in his lifetime and still one of the most popular travelogues. Hartford: American Publishing Co., 1875. Twain signs the flyleaf with both his pen and given names, ''To Dr. Agnew / with grateful remem-brances of / Samuel L. Clemens / (Mark Twain.) / Hartford June 1875''. The recipient, Dr. Cornelius Agnew, was an early surgeon specializing in diseases of the ear and eye. Bound in publisher's brown morocco and marbled boards with gilt lettering; marbled edges and endpapers. Book contains 234 illustrations from Twain's travels, including tissued frontispieces. Measures 6'' x 9'' and runs 651pp., with five additional pages of ads. Some wear to boards, including abrasion to lower right corner of front board. Foxing to endpapers. Overall in very good condition. Rare as signed.
