Fascinating compilation of every ''Harper's Weekly'' magazine printed in 1865. Hardcover book published by Harper's Weekly is entitled ''Harper's Weekly / A Journal of Civilization / Volume 9.'' Harper Brothers: New York: 1865. The end of the Civil War and the complete saga of Abraham Lincoln's assassination are reviewed one Saturday at a time in this stately oversized volume. Interestingly, the 14 April assassination of Lincoln is not addressed until the 29 April issue, in which Lincoln's killer John Wilkes Booth appears as the cover story. Published at the dawn of photojournalism, engraved images based on photos and drawings include half and full page illustrations of the murder itself in Ford's Theater and the flight of the assassin across the stage, Lincoln reading to his small son Tad, Lincoln on his deathbed, the funeral procession, Booth's capture at the Garrison barn and transport in the ''Montauk.'' War articles discuss the final battles and Confederate defeat. Also revealed are scenes from the conspirators' trial and hanging, the Suez Canal and Camp Sumter. Ad space is populated with blurbs that tout the latest revolvers, patent medicines and prosthetic limbs. Illinois acreage is heavily advertised. Book runs 832pp. in total, approximately 16pp. per issue, and measures 11.5'' x 16.5''. Black cloth boards feature a ''Harper's Weekly'' embossed design and gilt lettering. Mild toning with scattered foxing to leaves. Some fabric loss to board corners and sunning to backstrip. Overall in very good condition. An impressive record of a critical period in the history of the United States.
