Hans Christian Andersen autograph letter signed. The Danish children's book author writes from Basnas, Denmark on 31 March 1870 to General Christian T. Christensen. Penned in Danish, it translates, in part: ''...There are men to whom we feel drawn at once at the first meeting, and who become dear to us, and you are such a man...we will probably never meet again, for I don't think I will ever come to America, although I am certainly not writing in the desire. I promised you a small bouquet as a greeting to your wife. I have something of a gift in preparing such, but the flowers must be fresh; it is the color grouping that has an effect, if the flowers are dried, the effect is mostly gone...if it is flowers and greens from Danish soil...and remembrance of the land of your birth, you must take it as evidence of my sincere good will. You will soon depart for the great land beyond the ocean...Remember me also to the publishers of the Riverside Magazine and my dear friend there Mr. Horace C. Scudder...Hans Christian Andersen''. General Christensen organized the two Scandinavian companies in the 1st New York Infantry during the Civil War, going on to serve as Danish Consul. 2pp. on a single sheet. Measures 5.25'' x 8.25''. Slightly irregularity to edges, one lightly touching signature, overall very good condition.
