Medallion awarded to Sammy Davis, Jr. in 1967 by the Grammy Awards board, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. An inscription engraved to the reverse reads: ''In appreciation / Sammy Davis, Jr. / The Best on Record / 1967''. The Rat Pack member participated as a host in ''The Best on Record,'' a televised Grammy's award special aired by NBC. Before the Grammy Awards were broadcast live as they are today, they were held privately. ''The Best on Record'' was the version taped later for public broadcast. Davis is remembered as one of the greatest entertainers of all time; his entertainment career stretched from vaudeville to comedy to music, with outstanding success in each. In addition, he is credited with using his status as a public figure to bridge racial gaps across the country during a pivotal time in American history. Medallion is housed in a hinged wooden case with felt lining and a satin ribbon. Measures 3'' in diameter. The case measures 4.75'' x 4.75''.
