Harry Truman typed letter signed as President on official White House stationery, dated 25 February 1950. Letter is addressed to North Dakota Congressman Usher Burdick and discusses Truman's gratitude for Burdick's support of the Fair Employment Practices Commission Act, which the House approved the year the letter was written, though which was overturned by the Senate in a filibuster. Letter also mentions their mutual interest in the Wild West era of America. Reads in part: ''...I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support on the F.E.P.C. Bill. I have just obtained a copy of a book, recently published, called THE LAST CHANCE, written by a man named John Myers. It is devoted entirely to Tombstone, Arizona...I think you would be particularly interested in what he has to say about some of Wyatt Earp's activities in Deadwood, South Dakota, in the late sixties...You and I are both interested in that period between 1865 and 1890 when the West was being first settled and brought under the law of the land. I don't think there is anything in the traditions of the history of the world that can equal some of the tales that come out of that period...'' Signed ''Harry Truman'' in clear, bold black ink. Card-style letter measures 7'' x 8.75'' on one page. Letter has a very minor ink smudge and expected crease from mailing, else fine condition. Also includes original postmarked White House envelope with some tearing and wear.
