Autograph letter signed on U.S. Senate stationery from Vermont Senator Redfield Proctor whom Theodore Roosevelt was visiting when Garfield was struck down, thus catapulting Roosevelt to the Presidency. To Admiral Dewey dated 10 September 1901, Proctor writes in part, ''...Roosevelt was in Vt. for two days & we had a fine time till its ending by the terrible tragedy at Buffalo. He left my house at 11 Friday eve by special train...'' 5.25'' x 6.75'' letter runs 2pp. Very good condition.
