Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed ''Ike'' as Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces, dated 2 November [1944]. Here, Eisenhower writes to his wife, Mamie, mentioning enclosed photo negatives (not present), as well as wartime correspondence with his son, John. Eisenhower also mentions Lieutenant General Lucian Truscott, who commanded the 5th army through the hard 1944-45 winter shortly after this letter was written. Two-page letter in ink reads in part: ''Darling: This morning I wrote to you, but now I hear that Gen. Truscott is leaving for Washington tomorrow. I'm sending another short note just because you will have it, probably, in a couple days. The enclosed pictures are negatives, I think. They don't look so hot to me, but if you like any, I believe you can get them printed in the U.S. They were taken 2-3 months ago, or more. I sent Johnny a long letter this morn. I get a big kick out of writing to him & hope he does not get bored with my 'talk.' Your letter, yesterday, said you'd already received the perfume I sent you for Nov. 14. I do hope you like it -- Lee made the selection. Naturally I have no time to go to the city. I hear that it is quite 'dead', but that here & there a few night spots are bright. I haven't been in a restaurant or public dining room since the war started. I have been to 2 'soldier' shows; one in Algiers, one in London. This morning I wrote everything down I could think of -- so there's little that now comes to mind. However, I stay in good health (my knee is practically well) & go along my accustomed way. Everyone around me seems well also...Tomorrow I have 2 ceremonies, another next Wednesday. I hate them. Well sweet, don't forget me, because I love you heaps. Always yours, Ike''. 2pp. letter (on two separate sheets) measures 8'' x 10.5'' with minor toning and two expected folds from mailing, else near fine. Includes original army-postmarked envelope.
