U.S. flag flown in space aboard the Columbia on NASA's very first space shuttle mission. This ''Stars and Bars'' orbited Earth 36 times in the shuttle. Flag is mounted to a certificate bearing mission insignia and photos of the spacecraft, along with a printed statement that reads: ''Presented to Jerome B. Hammack / This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle 'Columbia' (STS-1) April 12-14, 1981. It is presented to you in recognition of the significant contribution you made to the success of the mission.'' Hammack, an aeronautical engineer, was involved in designing space capsules. Flag is signed in blue felt tip by the Director of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Chris Kraft. Flag measures 5.75'' x 4''. Certificate measures 8.5'' x 11''. Ink notation in an unknown hand to bottom edge of flag reads: ''Flown aboard Columbia on STS-1 April 12-14 1981''. Smudging to flag signature, else near fine.
