Carl Van Vechten autograph letter signed on personalized stationery, dated 28 June 1924. Author, photographer, critic, Van Vechten led a varied career, helping to promote many of the Harlem Renaissance writers, including Langston Hughes. His iconic photographs include portraits of legendary celebrities. Addressed to friend Phoebe Gilkson, letter in purple ink references his 1924 novel, ''The Tattooed Countess'' and reads in part, ''...I forgot to say that details connected with the issuance of the Tattooed Countess, Red & the Lord of the Sea, make my almost daily attendance at the office of Alfred A. Knopp imperative...'' With cute postscript: ''June 28* - 1924 / *I think that once I was marred on this day, but I cannot be quite sure.'' Letter measures 6.75'' x 8.75'' on 2pp. card-style, front and back format. Includes original postmarked envelope addressed in Vechten's hand. Minor toning, else near fine.
