Broadside issued by King Charles II in response to the infamous Popish Plot. The plot was a hoax perpetrated by Titus Oates, whose false claims of a Catholic conspiracy to kill the King resulted in the execution of more than a dozen innocent people. At the height of anti-Catholic sentiment in Britain, Charles issues this proclamation, dated 10 November 1678, ordering all ''popish recusants'' over age 16 to do repairs to their dwellings or their parents' dwellings and forbidding their travel outside a 5 mile radius of their homes. Recusants were those who were not inclined to attend Anglican church services or harbored Catholic sympathies. Broadsides such as these were distributed on the streets during the middle ages to facilitate communication between the throne and the people. Measures 11.5'' x 21''. Foxing, toning, creasing, and separation to fold at bottom edge repaired with tape to verso. Mounted to paper. Very good.
