J. Edgar Hoover signed ''The Story of the FBI'' published by E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.: New York: 1947. As FBI Director, he inscribes the front free endpaper: ''To / Howard R. Doyle / With most cordial regards / from / J. Edgar Hoover / 1.6.48''. Hoover served as Director from 1924-1972, during the FBI's involvement in WWII and high-profile cases such as John Dillinger and the Arthur Baker Gang. These are discussed here, along with the FBI's period protocol for agent training and crime solving methodologies. 286pp. volume contains a generous amount of photos and comes bound in blue cloth boards with a printed FBI seal to the front board. Measures 6.75'' x 9.75''. Sunning to backstrip and rear board with some soiling to front board and wear to spine corners. Very good.
