Augustus Busch, son of the founder of the Anheuser-Busch brewery, signs a typed letter, dated 31 December 1897, promoting his malt product for health purposes. Anheuser-Busch advocated the food value of Malt-Nutrine, a malt extract, as a tonic for various ailments suffered by everyone from laborers and businessmen to mothers and children, even though it contained 2% alcohol. Here he writes to a Mr. W.A. William, likely a druggist, in Henry, Missouri, who would have sold the product. Busch writes in part, ''...the retail druggist, who...is the real keeper of the public health...If you sell to the consumers at 25 cents per single bottle...you realize a handsome profit, which we hope will induce you to recommend Malt-Nutrine to all...in need of a tonic of unquestioned merit...Malt-Nutrine...contains...less than 2% of alcohol, thus making it superior to all...which contain 4 to 7%...'' He signs, ''Aug A. Busch''. Minor soiling and separation to folds of 8.5'' x 11'' letter on Anheuser-Busch letterhead lavishly illustrated with the company logo touched with gilt and the image of a Malt-Nutrine bottle. Very good condition.
