Longstreet was shot in the shoulder during the Battle of the Wilderness and had not yet regained use of his right arm when he wrote this letter. Holding a pencil with his left hand, he writes from New Orleans, 17 July 1865: ''...I take pleasure in recommending Mr. E.A. Burke as an active and intelligent business gentleman, and I believe him equal to almost any business that may be entrusted to him. I have known him some time and have every reason to confide in his probity and integrity. Respectfully, James Longstreet''. Beneath Longstreet's message, another man adds his recommendation. Major Burke fought in the Civil War at Galveston. 1pp. measures 5.5'' x 9''. Minor foxing and a paper clip outline at the tail edge. Small chip to the left edge. Pencil notations in the top margin read ''1865'' and ''Rare''. In very good condition.
