Taney presided over the landmark Dred-Scott case in 1857, while Daniel and Grier sided with that majority; the case was an important milestone in the march toward Civil War 4 years later. Near the top edge an unknown hand writes ''Judges of the Supreme Court of the United States''. Measures 8'' x 6.25''. Toning, irregular left edge, light soiling, and ink notation to bottom edge.
