Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. He writes to his wife, Mamie, in a letter he dates simply 28 October. It reads in part: ''My darling...I'm human enough to get some satisfaction out of believing that the theory by which I've lived my years in the army has been somewhat, even if accidentally and fortuitiously vindicated in my own selection for responsibilities and accompanying honors far above my just desserts. I think of the many many times I've argued that 'personal pull' and politics were not so important in the army as hard work and devotion to duty. I still believe it - and I don't begrudge the many thousands of hours I put in 'over and above' prescribed office and field periods. Certainly the people that I recommend are 'performers' - I don't give a hoot about 'pull', or friends or anything else...A recent letter of yours said some of my latest notes sounded 'strained' - I can give no reason - but I'm not at all surprised. In a job like this one is always watching to preserve an even temperament & attitude in all business dealings, so I suppose that when I relax to write to you I sort of 'steam over' occasionally. Anyway - nothing I say can mean that I do not love you and miss you - this I do all the time. So don't worry about my language (but I got a letter today from someone in the US who is horrified to read about my 'cussing') and just remember I'm coming back to you as soon as this dark dark war is over. Lots of love / Always - Ike''. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.25''. Near fine.
