American satirist H.L. Mencken signed first edition of his ''Notes on Democracy,'' Alfred A. Knopf: New York: 1926. Signed ''HL Mencken'' on the limitation page, which notes this copy as #84 of 235, printed on Borzoi rag paper. A wicked satirist, Mencken opined on controversial subjects of the day (and of modern day), including religion, race, politics and science. Book spans 212pp. and measures 6.25'' x 9.5''. In publisher's paper boards with a green cloth spine and deckled edges. Sunning to backstrip, else fine. Original slipcase is included and bears the number 84 on its label, matching the limitation page. Slipcase is toned with some wear, including cracking to lower corners and chip to upper corners reinforced with tape. Very good.
