John Hancock military appointment signed as Governor of Massachusetts, dated 3 August 1791, promoting Jacob Townsley, a Revolutionary War veteran to the rank of Lieutenant in the Militia of the Commonwealth. Townsley's division was actually stationed in Lincoln County, Maine, then still part of Massachusetts. Though born in Springfield, Townsley (1759-1849) settled in Maine after the war and suggested the name ''Steuben'' for the town of his new home, after Baron von Steuben, his former commanding officer during the Revolutionary War.

With Hancock's characteristically large and accentuated signature at left under the seal. Countersigned by secretary John Avery at bottom. Document measures approximately 12.5'' x 15.75''. Tape repair on verso along fold lines causing some buckling on front. Light foxing. Very good condition with a prominent Hancock signature.
