Andrew Jackson autograph letter signed, composed on 29 October 1817 to Brigadier General John R. Coffee, who commanded troops under Jackson during the War of 1812 and the Creek Wars. Jackson mentions a letter he received from President James Monroe, almost certainly the well-known letter of 5 October 1817 in which Monroe urged Jackson to forego his retirement and command an offensive in Spanish Florida; Jackson abided the President's request, which set into motion the First Seminole War shortly thereafter. Written from the home of Mr. Hutchings (likely his nephew, John Hutchings), Jackson's letter reads in part,
''Genl / Mrs J & myself reached here last evening and found our friend Major H much better than when I left him.
We tarried last Thursday night at your house, left Polly and your sweet little ones all in good health, and anxiously expect seeing you the first of next month. I shall go onto the [Melton] Bluff tomorrow, from whence I will return as soon as I can - If you could with convenience come up to night I would be glad to see you - I have great hopes that we will be able to take the Major in with us in a few days -
I rec'd a letter from the P. of the U. States on the eve of my setting out that will compel me to return the moment I can / the subject when I see you - yours respectfully / Andrew Jackson.''
