Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed, dated 7 March 1945 on ''Allied Expeditionary Force / Office of the Supreme Commander'' stationery. Letter is addressed to Eisenhower's brother Edgar, and discusses the German's failed offensive in the Battle of the Bulge, which Eisenhower calls the ''Ardennes battle.'' Reads in full: ''Dear Edgar: Your letter of January 31 took an unusually long time to reach me, something over five weeks. Don't ever let yourself get unduly disturbed about criticism of 'generalship.' There have been so many people in this war that have told me exactly what I should do that if I should follow the advice of all, this whole army would be running in a great circle and possibly end down in the wilds of Central Africa. The Ardennes battle was just another fight in which the German, in typical fashion, gambled a lot in order to get back the initiative on this front. He lost -- just as he was sure to lose. I hope that the events of the past two or three weeks are showing people just how much he did lose when he left hundreds of tanks and more than a hundred thousand of his best remaining fighting men in the Ardennes. I am distressed to hear that Bernice has been sick. I hope she is well again. Give my love to her and to Janis and my best regards to those friends that I met at your golf club and at your house.'' Signed ''Dwight'' in black ink. Letter measures 8'' x 10.5'' on one page. Near fine.
