'Harper's Weekly / A Journal of Civilization'' hardcover compilation for the entire year of 1864. Harper & Brothers: New York: 1864. Articles, editorials and especially ''more than five hundred illustrations...among which are at least one hundred portraits of soldiers and statesmen...'' cover the events of the Civil War. Well known artists, such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Nast, were regular contributors. Issues include eyewitness sketches of the rebel assault on Ft. Saunders, massacre at Ft. Pillow, Army of the Potomac sleeping on their arms (by Homer), destruction of Lee's communications, Custer leading his cavalry on the banks of the Rapidan, Thanksgiving Day in the Army (also by Homer), and Sherman's March to the Sea. ''Emancipated Slaves, White and Colored'' shows children and adults ''set free by General Butler'' in New Orleans. A hopeful New Year's Eve illustration by Nast shows newly re-elected President Lincoln welcoming defeated Confederates to the ''Union Christmas Dinner''. Chapter-long installments of Charles Dickens' last novel, ''Our Mutual Friend,'' are also featured. Some loss of leather to board corners and spine, and light toning. Measures 11.5'' x 16.25''. Overall in very good condition.
