King George IV signed patent document as Prince Regent, dated 16 April 1811. In large script, he pens ''George PR'' near the top edge, just beneath a line that reads ''In the Name and on the Behalf of His Majesty''. Mental illness incapacitated the reigning King George III until his death in 1820, leaving his son to rule in his stead. Here, inventor Thomas Cranfield is granted the rights to ''an improvement upon machines for spinning & roving of cotton, flax, tow, hemp, wool & silk and twisting of thread.'' An embossed seal on the first page reads: ''One Pound / Ten Shillings''. Verso bears the inventor's name and official notations. 3pp. on card style stationery is countersigned by Richard Ryder and measures 7.75'' x 12.5''. Light foxing and toning to folds. Pinholes to fold intersections and separation to folds at right edge. Tear to right edge at lowermost fold line. In very good condition.
