John Tyler autograph letter signed, likely as President, regarding papers associated with the ''Chinese Treaty'', most likely referring to the Treaty of Wanghia which was signed into law by President Tyler on 17 January 1845. Marked Confidential and seemingly written to a Senator, Tyler writes, ''The papers sent with the China Treaty are the original which we have had no time to copy - a return of them when the Senate will have done with them is respected. / J. Tyler''. The Treaty of Wanghia is the first of the ''unequal treaties'', giving what China later considered humiliating concessions to foreign powers. Their passage during the decade of 1840-1850 largely contributed to China's growing nationalism and anti-imperialist sentiment in the 20th century. Single page measures 4.5'' x 7''. Folds and small hole at top, overall in very good to near fine condition with exceptionally bold handwriting.
