Benjamin Harrison document signed as President regarding the Johnstown Flood, the devastating flood resulting from the burst of the South Ford Dam that killed over 2,000 people and destroyed much of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Document is dated just four days after the flood, datelined Washington, D.C. on 4 June 1889. Harrison here signs as Chairman of the Johnstown Relief Committee, an unusual arrangement as Presidents didn't usually accept chairmanships of non-government related committees while in office. Document appoints an individual to receive funds ''for the relief of the Johnstown sufferers.'' Signed ''Benj Harrison'' as Chairman. Single page document measures 8.5'' x 7''. Light toning, splits starting along horizontal fold and short closed tears at top. Very good condition.
