Millard Fillmore circular letter signed as President, calling the U.S. Senate into session for the inauguration of his successor, Franklin Pierce, on 4 March 1853. A rare Presidential document regarding the peaceful succession of Presidents, letter reads in full, ''Objects interesting to the United States requiring that the Senate should be in session on the 4th of March next, to receive and act upon such communications as may be made to it on the part of the Executive, your attendance in the Senate Chamber, in this city, on that day at 10 O'Clock in the forenoon, is accordingly requested. / Millard Fillmore''. Succeeding to the Presidency upon the death of Zachary Taylor, Fillmore stated his desire to only serve one term, and did not run for reelection. Single page measures 7.25'' x 7.375''. Split starting along horizontal fold and light chipping, overall in very good to near fine condition with an exceptionally bold signature by Fillmore. Previously sold by Sotheby's in 2008 for $4,375.
