Chester Arthur letter signed just days into the Civil War, searching for a location to organize New York volunteers. Dated 22 April 1861, Arthur writes to General Duryea as Engineer in Chief with the rank of Quartermaster General, a position in which he excelled, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. Letter reads in part, ''I desire to use the Arsenal in Brooklyn as a depot for Volunteers mustered into the service...[signed] C. Arthur / Eng in Chief / Actg asst 2 NY Genl''. Single page on bifolium measures 6.25'' x 7.875'' on blue lined paper. Folds, light creasing and a few small mousing holes. Very good condition. Interior has draft reply in pencil by Duryea, approving the request.
