Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed ''Thompson'', written on the address panel of this aerogram sent to his childhood friend Paul Semonin. Dated 22 June 1965, Thompson's fortunes are finally changing with the success of his article on The Hell's Angels, leading to the book contract he announces here. Letter reads in part, ''...you are thinking in terms of 40 years from now, while I hesitate to think beyond 40 days. Or -- at the moment -- six months, due to the contract I just signed: $6000 guarantee against royalties for a paperback on Cycle gangs, hard-cover, TV etc. to be negotiated. I will be hard at it for at least 3-4 months. But will definitely take time off for the Aspen conference. Also have a film possibility on the Amazon, but that won't break until Xmas or so. Things are hopping and I shouldn't be writing letters. I have to whip up an outline for the Cycle book and right now I don't have the vaguest idea what I'll write. They gave me $1500 just to sign. Incredible. I've been drunk for two weeks...In all, things are looking up all around...I am counting on you to bring something decent for me from the Dark [Africa] etc. Even if I have to pay for it. A lion's mane, or something like that. Something huge and weird...H''. Single page measures 7.25'' x 12''. Chipping on edges from opening, pinhole and light toning, overall very good condition.
