Logbook chronicling a whaling expedition from September 1841 through November 1845, with daily entries. Mammoth book begins on 3 September 1841 for the Bark Cora out of New Bedford, under the command of Captain Archilous Baker, ''Bound to the Pacific Ocean'', and ends on 29 November over three years later. Numerous whale stamps are present, such as the one on 6 October 1841 next to which is written, ''lost his head''. The entry continues in part, ''...saw a large sperm Whale @ 3 p.m. lowered 2 Boats the Starboard Boat struck him got turned over...lost the boat the Starboard Boat struck again and killed @ 6 p.m. got him alongside...strong breezes laying by with the Whale alongside...getting ready for cutting / Noon Lat 33-24 - Long 24-11...''
A list of the crew aboard the Bark Cora is also included, made from reading the entire log. Approximately 75 men are listed with details on three: one man ''carried down by a line'' on 10 July 1843; one died of consumption on 3 July 1844; one discharged before sailing from Sydney. More details of each event are documented in the logbook, such as the 10 July accident reading, ''James Ralph the Boatsteerer...was foul of the line...the whale struck him under water is uncertain saw no more of him...whale...spouting blood @ 1/2 past 11 took upon the Boats...''
Hardcover logbook runs approximately 200pp. and measures 10'' x 15.25'', bound in original marbled boards with spine replaced. Previous owner's label to front pastedown. Mousing to lower edges, affecting content of a few pages. Some dampstaining and expected wear, overall in very good condition. A fascinating account of a 19th century whaling expedition that circumnavigated the globe.
