Lot of two silver gelatin photos taken by David F. Barry, the western photographer whose portraits of the Lakota people earned him the nickname ''Little Shadow Catcher'' by the tribe. First photo shows Chief Low Dog holding an axe, noted as ''Chief of Gall's band of Indians'' and also as ''A Bad Indian. Killed Sioux mail carrier near Wolf Point, Montana; pegged him to the ground, put grass and brush around him, then set fire to it, and watched him burn...'' It's not known whether Barry himself wrote these notes or someone else. Photo measures 6.5'' x 8.5'', with Barry's embossed copyright stamp at lower right. Photo is affixed to black construction paper, on the verso of which is the second photo, showing Curley, General George Custer's scout who was with him at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Measures 5'' x 7''. With Barry's copyright stamp to lower right. Some fading and discoloration to Chief Low Dog's photo, else near fine.
