Thomas Jefferson autograph manuscript, unsigned, concerning the estate of his friends John and Lucy Ludwell Paradise, circa 1815. Document lists the order in which descendants shall inherit the estate, likely given to Philip Ignatius Barziza, the grandson of the Paradises, whom Jefferson was helping with his inheritance. Manuscript reads in full:

''A copy of Sr. Wm. Jones's statement of the limitations of the real estate in the same marriage contract of mr. & mrs. Paradise.

1. to the husband for life, without impeachment of waste, & with power of leasing for 21 years, reserving the best rent.
2. rem'r [remainder] to the wife for life Etc. and with the like power.
3. rem'r to trustees to preserve contingent rem'rs.
4. rem'r to such child or children of the marriage (in tail or for a less estate) as the husband & wife, or the survivor shall appoint.
5. rem'r (in default of an appointment) to the children of the marriage in tail, as tenants in common.
6. rem'r (in default of issue) to such person as the wife alone shall appoint.
7. rem'r (in default of such appointment) to the survivor in fee.''

Single page measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Tissue repair to verso along folds, chipping and moisture browning to right edge, toning and light foxing. Overall in fair to good condition with bold, legible handwriting.
