Large lot of Presidential, historical, literary and entertainment signed items. Lot includes:
1) Harry Truman signed Volume I of his memoirs, "Year of Decisions". Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Co., 1955. Truman signs the half-title page without inscription, "Harry Truman". Also includes unsigned Volume II. Each volume measures 5.75" x 8.5". Light wear to books and some chipping to dust jackets, overall in very good condition.
2) Herbert Hoover signed photo, inscribed on the photographic mat, "To Harry L. Derby / With the good wishes of / Herbert Hoover". Silver gelatin matte photo measures 8" x 10". Closed tear and creasing to margins, overall in very good condition.
3-5) First printing of Herbert Hoover's 3-volume memoirs, with two volumes signed by Hoover. New York: The MacMillan Co., 1951-1952. Volume I, "Years of Adventure", is inscribed by Hoover on the front free endpaper: "To Harry Derby / With the kind regards / of Herbert Hoover". Volume III, "The Cabinet and the Presidency", is also signed on the front free endpaper, "To my good friend / Harry L. Derby / from / Herbert Hoover". Volume II, "The Great Depression" is also present, but unsigned. All books measure 6.5" x 9.5". Light wear, else near fine condition. With a vintage slip on a Waldorf-Astoria memo stating that the books are not to be released until after the 16 October 1951 publication date.
6) Autograph letter signed by poet William Cullen Bryant. Dated 26 November 1877, Bryant writes in part, "…it must be into that class to which the sun and stars belong, whose useful brightness never grows dim. I am glad to learn that you are doing good, and hope that you may be long spared to that purpose. / I send you, as you request, a photograph with my signature. I wish it were the likeness of a younger man, but perhaps the lady for whom you request it is an antiquarian of the same class as Schliemann and Cisnola…W.C. Bryant." Single page letter measures 5" x 8". Folds, light wear and toning; very good condition.
7) Alec Guinness autograph note signed, dated 1 December 1984. On his personal note card, the "Star Wars" actor writes in part, "…I think you must have made a mistake about me being in a photograph with [?]. Although i knew his wife slightly I can't recall having met him at any time - and certainly not in a [?]-room. If I had I am sure I would remember. / All good wishes, / Alec Guinness. Note card measures 5.5" x 3.5". Near fine condition.
8) Civil War document signed by Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy. Dated 25 May 1863, document concerns the vessel USS Ticonderoga. Signed "Gideon Welles", document measures 7.875" x 9.875". Toning and light wear, in very good condition.
