Two volume set of ''The Whole Works of F. Rabelais M.D.'' by Francis Rabelais, translated by Peter Motteux. London: James Woodward, 1708. A satirical writer, humanist, priest and one of the first medieval surgeons, Rabelais' most well known literature were these works, a series of satirized chivalry romances that greatly influenced French literature. This two-volume set is a reprint of Motteux's original translation, first published in 1694. First book is titled ''The Whole Works of F. Rabelais, M.D. in Two Volumes. Or, The Lives, Heroic Deeds and Sayings of Gargantua & Pantagruel.'' Second book is titled ''Pantagruel's Voyage to the Oracle of the Bottle. Being the Fourth and Fifth Books of the Works of Francis Rabelais, M.D.'' Each measures 5'' x 8'', bound in contemporary brown calf over marbled boards with ribbed spine. Very good condition.
