Rudyard Kipling autograph letter signed, composed on 25 March 1897 to a Charles O. Brewster at the University Club in New York. Kipling writes of his book of poetry, ''The Seven Seas'', even including a quote from ''The Rubaiyat of Omar Khay'yam'', which inspired the title. Penned in black fountain pen, letter reads in full,
''Dear Sir / I have to acknowledge with many thanks your letter of the 5th together with the old Farmer's Almanac which I have generally known as the 'Robert B Thomas' to distinguish it from all sorts of 'Farmer's Almanacs', Farm Calendars and such like. / I should feel much in your debt if you would further point out to me any error in fact or inference which occurs in the story that I may correct it for 'book form.' The title 'Seven Seas' comes from the verse in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khay'yam
'When you and I behind the veil are passed
Oh but the long, long time the world will last
Which of our coming and departure heeds
as the Seven Seas would heed a pebble cast.'
very sincerely yours / Rudyard Kipling''.
Bifolium letter measures 4.125'' x 6'' as folded. Accompanied by original envelope measuring 4.5'' x 3.25''. Single horizontal fold and foxing. Very good condition.
