Scarce first edition, first issue of ''Dracula'' by Bram Stoker, a high point of classic horror. London: Archibald Constable, 1897. With all first issue points: blank final leaf following p. 390, no advertisements or publisher's catalog, and bound in publisher's yellow boards stamped in red on the spine and covers. Perhaps no metaphor of terror has retained its hold on the human imagination more than the blood-drinking protagonist Count Dracula, with dozens of adaptations since the book entered the public domain. While some criticized the novel's epistolary structure when it was released in 1897, all agreed it was one of the most terrifying novels ever published, with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle claiming it was ''the very best story of diablerie which I have read''. Only 3,000 first issue copies were printed, with an unrestored copy remaining in very scarce supply. This first issue has some light soiling, cocking to spine, and a small .75'' L-shaped cut to top of backstrip. Separation just starting at hinges, and previous owner's name discreetly written to front pastedown. Overall in very good condition.
