Beautifully rendered fore-edge painting on ''Barnaby Rudge'', featuring a portrait of Charles Dickens as a young man and scenes from the novel. London: Chapman and Hall, n.d. but circa 1880s. Concealed by gilt, fore-edge painting is revealed when pages are fanned, a technique invented by the bookbinder for King Charles II, who reportedly grew tired of his books not being returned to his library, and sought a way to secretly identify them in his friends' collections. Bound in forest green morocco with gilt embellishments and marbled endpapers. Measures 6.375'' x 8.5''. Light wear with rubbing to spine, overall in very good plus condition.
