Alberto Giacometti autograph letter signed, composed in black fountain pen on 4 May 1935 from Stampa, Switzerland, his place of birth. Giacometti writes to his childhood friend Alice Hirschfeld, translated from French in full, ''Stampa, May 4, 1935 / Dear Alice / I left without having a chance to call you; I did not go out in the evening (there was no phone) and in the morning I got up just in time to rush to the train station still asleep and leave. Please also forgive me for my rushed departure in the middle of the road to catch the tram! I arrived here still tired enough to sleep 14 hours! (yes, no less) and I have only come to life today around noon and still a little bit in [illegible]. It is cold, unpleasant, and spring here appears to still be quite weak, and the country appears quite abandoned and arid, I don't know the words that would give the right impression of it. That is actually quite pleasant for me, and one feels apart from the world, as far away as possible. I really want to walk around the village, toward the forest, along the road, for now I still haven't seen anything. I also have a strong desire to work and I think I'll start Monday, I hope to manage to do something during these three weeks...That's all I can write right now, very little and also bad, as you can see! And plus I'm rushing to get this letter mailed------------- / I hope to stop in Zurich when I leave and see you; we'll continue our interrupted walk! / Very affectionately your / Alberto''. Letter measures 8.5'' x 10.75''. Folds and light toning, else near fine condition.
