Copy of ''The Pennsylvania Packet, and Daily Advertiser'' from 22 January 1788, with reporting on individual states debating and ratifying the U.S. Constitution, with the Constitutional Convention having recently been completed. Virginia, in particular, is highlighted with a lengthy poem appearing on the third page entitled ''The New Constitution / A Song'' reading in part, ''The kingdom of Hell, As historians tell, Being once in great tribulation, From the south to the north, All its subjects call'd forth, To consult for the good of the nation...The American states, After many debates, Seeing plainly their weak situation; Were resolv'd to repair...a well form'd and choice constitution...'' The Virginia Ratifying Convention would ultimately approve the new Constitution and enter the United States by a slim margin of 89 to 79 later that year. Newspaper runs 4pp. and measures 11.375'' x 18.75''. Disbound at left side and small tears along margins, overall in very good plus condition.
