'New-York Tribune'' newspaper from 19 December 1865, reporting on adoption of the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. After passage by Congress on 31 January 1865, the 13th amendment went to the legislature of each state for passage, with two-thirds adopting the amendment on 6 December 1865 and then proclaimed on 18 December, one day prior to this newspaper. Coverage of the monumental event reads in small part, ''Dispatches From Secretary Seward...Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction...'' and then signed in type by the Secretary of State, ''Wm. H. Seward''. Editorial commentary follows, reading in part, ''Slavery has no longer an existence in law. The Secretary of State of the U.S. this day officially proclaims that the requisite two-thirds of the states of the Union have ratified the Amendment to the Constitution whereby Slavery is abolished...Praise be to God! We live, at last, in a country where no human creature can be held as a slave!'' Paper runs 8pp. with coverage of the event on page four. Paper measures 15.5'' x 20.5''.
