Elsa Einstein typed letter signed, composed on 23 February 1934 shortly after she and Albert Einstein moved to Princeton from Germany. Elsa writes to her cousin Erich, with content on the Nobel-award winning Jewish German chemist Fritz Haber, the ''father of chemical warfare'' whose inventions were used in the concentration camps during World War II. Letter in German translates in part, ''...Provided that I know about your arrival two days in advance, I can promise you matzo balls or Schupfnudeln. Not to mention the intellectual pleasures. I will ask you sometime soon. Unfortunately, next Sunday will not work; we already have so many guests coming that day. However, we will be able to arrange it on one of the following Sundays, and I will contact you then. / Haber's death hit us hard as well. It is rare for such a brilliant and successful life to end so tragically. He died full of bitterness, seeing most of his life's work destroyed. After all, his institute and his whole existence there had been an inseparable part of him. He was not able to overcome this loss. He was a wonderful human being, and spending time with him always left us feeling enriched...[signed] Elsa.'' Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 10.75''. Folds, overall near fine.
